When a car will not start, the battery is often the first suspect. But starting and charging systems perform different functions. Identifying what happens during an attempt avoids beginning with an assumed failed part that has not been evaluated.
In this guide
Listen and observe without repeated attempts
Say whether there is one click, repeated clicking or slow cranking. It also matters if the engine appears to crank normally but never starts. Repeated attempts are not needed to gather more information. Share what you noticed and whether symptoms changed after previous starting assistance.

A discharged battery does not establish the whole cause
DENSO recommends starting from the symptom and testing the system rather than replacing parts randomly. Repeated discharge calls for knowing how long the car sat and whether accessories or repairs were added recently. A new battery does not establish that the rest of the system works correctly.

Ask for an explanation of the checks
Ask what was found in the battery, terminals, starting and charging systems as applicable. Vehicles do not all use the same battery or replacement procedure. Before authorizing, confirm compatibility, access and any registration or programming appropriate and available for your model.
If the vehicle cannot reach the workshop
When requesting towing, give the precise location and whether the car is in a garage, parking area or on a public road. Say whether it rolls and whether keys are accessible. A&J can arrange pickup to the Orange workshop; coverage, cost and inspection availability are confirmed by phone.
What to have ready when you call
- Sound and response during the starting attempt.
- Battery age, if known.
- Time parked and recent accessories.
- Location and access if towing is needed.
Questions about this topic
Does clicking confirm a failed starter?
No. System conditions need checking before assigning the cause to one component.
Can a new battery discharge again?
Yes. Explain when it happens so further checks can be considered.
